What Is Advocacy?

What Is Advocacy?:. Advocacy can involve acting on someone’s behalf when that person or organisation may be less able to do so. However, advocacy may also involve providing another person or organisation with skills, knowledge and support so that their ability to act on their own behalf is also strengthened.

:. The Community Advocacy on Gambling Project aims to fulfil both of these functions by communicating community and local government views to relevant government and industry stakeholders, but also by providing community and local government groups with the information, skills and support necessary to better advance their views on gambling relevant to their local area, or relevant community.

Principles

:. The work of the project is based on the following principles:

  1. Access – a clear channel for the community to voice concerns over gambling issues;
  2. Advocacy – representing community views to stakeholders and decision makers in government and the gambling industry;
  3. Social Justice – promoting fairness in addressing the imbalances in capability to represent community concerns on gambling;
  4. Inclusiveness – ensuring practices are responsive and sensitive to cultural needs;
  5. Active Listening – seeking opportunities to listen to community concerns and acting in a responsive manner; and
  6. Evidence Based – that the activities and actions of the project are referenced to clear evidence in undertaking any responses.
